Homeless Action Service

As Soroptimists we are pleased to be able to assist at the Lancaster and District Homeless Action Service at Edward Street in Lancaster, by making and serving Sunday lunch.  Two volunteers from our club do this service once a month throughout the year and cook for average of 25 people.

ROTA  (October 2011 -- September 2012)

The menu can vary from soup and sandwiches to chicken korma and rice, usually followed by dessert, cake or ice cream. As most of the food provided is generously donated this obviously dictates the menu.

This service is very much appreciated and it is a pleasure to observe everyone tucking in!

Everyone leaves with happy faces after enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and then we get on with washing up -- not such happy faces!

Apart from providing this practical service, we also assist financially -- every year we have a "Christmas Post" at our December business meeting to which we bring and exchange Christmas cards, and give a donation to LDHAS in lieu of the postage we would have spent on sending the cards to our fellow members.

In August 2010, President Pam joined the Anglican Bishop of Lancaster and other volunteers in sleeping on the steps of Lancaster Town Hall, to raise awareness and funds for the Homeless shelter. (See Events page.)
